Tech Tuesday: Xylophone for iPad

Image

Well, my apologies for the lag in posts…some blogger I happen to be after only three days of posting and then to go MIA for 5 days!  I am back with a good iPad app for you little musicians at home or in the classroom!  I hope this makes up for it 🙂

This week’s tech post is also a regularly-visited app on our family iPad.  My three year old is enjoying learning how to play tunes by ear and this is a great tool for him.  I started out by explaining to him that the longer the bar on a xylophone, the lower the note, and as you move to shorter and shorter bars, the notes gradually get higher and higher.  In my music classes, I also use this to introduce the kids to high and low notes; they always gather around the ipad quite excitedly and are thrilled to discover that it is these individual notes that make up their well-loved songs.

This app is simply called “Xylophone” by Piikea Street (and they happen to have at least a couple other apps that my kids enjoy that are also educational if you want to check them out).  It is very simple, appealing to the eye and easy to use.  Children can choose an icon from the top of the screen and will then be led by a “helping hand” to play a certain familiar tune on the xylophone.  Some to  choose from include Twinkle Twinkle, Happy Birthday, Old MacDonald and Jingle Bells.  My little guy is always thrilled when he has completed a tune he recognizes!  Kids can also play freely with the xylophone, creating their own music and rhythms.

This is a free app and can  be downloaded from the Apple Store.  I hope your little ones enjoy as much as mine do!  Happy Tuesday!
