Musical Monday…Song Bags!

ImageSo this is one I can’t take credit for, but that I really, really LOVE and use every day in our music classes.  It is fabulous for building literacy, memory, recall…and kids LOVE IT.  It is something you can use in your homes, music classes or classroom.  We use it as an ice-breaker with the kids in the first class, and continue as an opening routine throughout the year.  I have compiled mine from things I found around the house, so it is so simple to make and reaps big rewards!

Kids love to sing, and it promotes so many good things academically, as well as socially and emotionally.  I remember being in grade 3 music class, and having to sing in front of the class TERRIFIED me.  However, I see these little ones of 1, 2, 3 years of age with no reservations whatsoever about singing.  So somewhere along the way, there is a big disconnect…we become self-conscious, afraid to sing in front of others.  Use this bag to promote singing for kids of any age!

The idea is to put small objects into a bag which represent simple, well-known and easy to learn songs.  Kids then draw one item per class (or at home, you can play all day if you can find enough objects!) and as a group we brainstorm the song and sing it together.  Some things I have in my song bag:

– star cookie cutter – Twinkle Twinkle

– Sock monkey – 5 Little Monkeys

– Toy Tractor – Old MacDonald had a Farm

– Stuffed Dog – How Much is that Doggie in the Window

– Rubber Duck – 6 Little Ducks

– Spider – Itsy Bitsy Spider

– Fish – 1,2,3,4,5

– Magnetic Letter – Alphabet Song….

The list really could go on and on and extend over an entire class session.  Please check out http://nurturestore.co.uk/create-a-song-bag-to-boost-language-and-maths-skills for my original inspiration and many more ideas!

Have fun!
